Health Minister Drese recommends flu vaccination
At the start of the flu season, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania's Health Minister Stefanie Drese (SPD) has called on people to get vaccinated against the virus. "The beginning of November is a very good time to be optimally protected in the cold season," Drese said in Schwerin on Friday. Experts assume that the influenza viruses will become more active again in the coming weeks and months.
According to the Ministry of Health, a so-called high-dose vaccine is available again this year for people aged 60 and over, which leads to an improved immune response. The Standing Vaccination Commission recommends vaccination not only for older people, but also for pregnant women, the chronically ill and medical staff, among others.
In Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, the flu vaccination is also publicly recommended for people outside the risk groups, Drese emphasized. "It's best to discuss this with your family doctor," she said. Vaccinations are available from GPs and health authorities.
Following a noticeable decline in flu cases as a result of coronavirus-related contact restrictions, there were significantly more infections again at the end of last year and the beginning of 2023. Coughs, colds, bronchitis, sore throats and pneumonia had also increased again. The coronavirus is also still active.
Given the current flu season and the increased activity of influenza viruses, it's crucial for individuals to consider getting vaccinated against diseases like the flu. As Health Minister Drese suggested, discussing vaccination with your family doctor is the best course of action.
