Health - Health insurance company complains about careless use of painkillers
According to the health insurance company Barmer, painkillers are often used too carelessly. "The combination of supposedly harmless painkillers in particular can have fatal consequences," said Bavaria's Barmer regional managing director Alfred Kindshofer on Wednesday with regard to the 2023 Drug Report. Drugs such as ibuprofen or diclofenac are also available without a prescription. According to Barmer, doctors are therefore often unaware that their patients are taking such preparations if they do not report it themselves.
Details of the report, which analyzes figures from 2021, will be published by the health insurance company this morning. According to the Barmer Pain Atlas, 499 people per 10,000 inhabitants suffer from chronic pain. The lowest number of people affected nationwide was in the district of Dillingen an der Donau in Swabia with 279 people per 10,000 inhabitants. According to the report, Landshut brought up the rear with 856 sufferers per 10,000 inhabitants.

Ibuprofen and diclofenac, two common painkillers, are often misused, according to Barmer's Drug Report. This careless use can lead to serious health issues, as highlighted by Alfred Kindshofer, the regional managing director of Barmer in Bavaria. These painkillers are even available without prescription, which sometimes leads doctors to be unaware of their patients' usage. Barmer's report also reveals that chronic pain affects 499 individuals per 10,000 inhabitants on average, with the lowest rate in Dillingen an der Donau and the highest in Landshut, both in Bavaria.
This situation calls for increased awareness about the proper use of painkillers and the importance of reporting such medication usage to doctors. Health insurance companies like Barmer play a significant role in advocating for responsible use of medication to ensure the well-being of society, especially in the context of rising health concerns in Munich and Bavaria.
In today's health-conscious world, it is crucial to remember that proper medication use is crucial not only for individual health but also for the overall healthcare system. The issue of painkillers misuse is a global problem, and addressing it requires collective efforts from healthcare providers, patients, and health insurance companies. By promoting education and awareness, we can ensure a safer and healthier society.
