Head of works council calls for job security until 2035

The head of the General Works Council at Mercedes-Benz has called for an extension of job security until 2035. "The environment is becoming more difficult," Ergun Lümali told the German Press Agency on Thursday. In uncertain times, employees need security.

"The ramp-up of e-mobility and the transformation will really kick into high gear after 2028 and 2029," said the employee representative. "We don't want to simply extend the agreement." With a view to the German production network, it is also necessary to specify which products and technologies the sites can be equipped with in order to secure employment.

The safeguarding of the future, known internally as "Zusi 2030", is a company agreement which, according to Mercedes, applies to the majority of the approximately 115,000 employees in Germany. In principle, it excludes compulsory redundancies until the end of 2029.

The Group was cautious. Even in times of the biggest transformation in the industry, Mercedes is offering secure employment, a spokesperson said in response to an inquiry. However: "In view of the long term of more than six years, we see no need to decide now on an extension of the agreement."

The General Works Council at Mercedes-Benz is proposing to use their sites for the production of e-mobility technologies to secure employment beyond 2029. Despite the extension of job security until 2035, the company spokesperson stated that there's no need to decide on an agreement extension right away due to the long timeline.
