Education - Head found for Thuringia's "German School"

The "German Professional School" for the vocational preparation of young foreigners in Thuringia, which is currently being established, now has a president. Following a selection process, Katrin Langer, who holds a doctorate in education and philology, will take on this role, the Ministry of Economics announced in Erfurt on Friday.

Langer most recently headed a joint project of the Thuringian chambers of commerce to promote the professional integration of foreign specialists and workers. Born in Berlin, she is a proven expert in skilled labor issues with a talent for improvisation, explained State Secretary for Economic Affairs Katja Böhler.

Several private education providers are currently on the shortlist to run the school, which aims to prepare young people with a migration background for vocational training in Bavaria.

According to the Ministry of Economics, the establishment of the "German Professional School" is intended to counter the growing shortage of skilled workers in the Thuringian economy. In addition to German language skills, the curriculum will also teach intercultural skills, basic knowledge about Germany and key values of the social and economic order.

The plan is to initially prepare around 1,000 young foreigners for an apprenticeship in a pilot phase until 2026, including internships. The school is set to start in March 2024 with the first intake at up to four locations in Bavaria. The Ministry of Economic Affairs will initially provide 2.5 million euros in 2024, 4 million euros in 2025 and 5 million euros one year later.
