- Hay bales burning on a field in Lichtenberg
Burning hay bales sparked a three-and-a-half-hour fire response in Berlin-Lichtenberg. Pedestrians noticed the flames on an open field in the Neu-Hohenschönhausen district and alerted the fire department, which reported the incident in the evening. Thirty-six hay bales were ablaze, left there for collection after a nearby meadow had been mowed.
The nearest water supply was a hydrant in a residential area, so three tanker trucks were deployed in a shuttle service, as the fire department described. Using shovels, axes, pitchforks, and later a wheel loader, firefighters separated the hay bales to ensure the fire was extinguished from within. Four volunteer fire departments were involved in the response. Police are investigating the cause of the fire.
Firefighters employed various tools, including shovels, axes, and pitchforks, in the firefighting effort to contain the blaze within the burning hay bales. Due to the proximity, three tanker trucks were utilized in a continuous relay, drawing water from the nearby residential hydrant to sustain the firefighting efforts.
