Haseloff: Budget crisis must not become a state crisis

Halfway through its first term of office, the state government draws a positive conclusion of its work and focuses on business relocations. However, one topic overshadows everything.

Haseloff: Budget crisis must not become a state crisis

Minister President Reiner Haseloff (CDU) has warned of the far-reaching consequences of the Constitutional Court's ruling on the federal budget. A budget crisis must not become a national crisis, said Haseloff on Tuesday in Magdeburg. It was up to the federal government to keep the German economy running. With a view to the upcoming local and European elections next year, the Minister President emphasized that it was now important to show that the vast majority of people stood in the middle, Haseloff said with a view to the political fringes.

For his own state government, Haseloff drew a positive conclusion of the first two and a half years in office. Haseloff said that the state government had been able to secure the framework conditions for Saxony-Anhalt's successful development despite difficult external conditions. "Intel is not the only proof of this." With the coronavirus pandemic, the war in Ukraine and the energy crisis, the first half of his term of office was characterized by crises "the likes of which I have not experienced in the last 30 years".

Saxony-Anhalt's Environment Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Armin Willingmann (SPD) praised the cooperation between the CDU, SPD and FDP in the black-red-yellow coalition. The work was proceeding smoothly, although not without conflict. Two and a half years ago, it was not easy to enter the coalition, said Willingmann. However, it was ultimately a good decision. Above all, the expansion of renewable energies was making progress.

FDP Infrastructure Minister Lydia Hüskens focused on the expansion of transport and digital infrastructure. Digital services are now part of public services. The conditions for this are being created. Nevertheless, it was also necessary for the coalition to make compromises. "That's nothing indecent," said Hüskens. They had succeeded in providing impetus.

The black-red-yellow government signed a coalition agreement in September 2021, around three months after the state elections. The next state election is scheduled for 2026 in Saxony-Anhalt.

The federal government has a crucial role in preventing the budget crisis from escalating into a national crisis, as stated by Minister President Haseloff. The political landscape, with its various factions, needs to work together to establish a consensus, acknowledges Haseloff.
