Harz National Park: Snow is not enough everywhere

The first cross-country ski trails are currently being prepared in the Harz National Park. However, the snow depths are not yet sufficient on all trails to be able to ski there, the national park announced on Wednesday. For example, the Schneewittchenloipe trail on the Sonnenberg could be groomed. The Rehberg trail has been pressed down to create a base. Preparation of the trails has also begun at Torfhaus and in the Schierke area.

"The conditions are already relatively good on cross-country ski trails that lie over roads. However, where the surface is unpaved and uneven and the snow cover is still too low, cross-country skiers will have to be patient," said the national park. Hikers should not walk on the groomed trails, as they would otherwise be damaged.

For cross-country skiers, the national park prepares around 150 kilometers of trails at altitudes of 350 to 930 meters, provided there is sufficient snow. In addition, there are around 50 kilometers of untracked ski trails that connect the trail systems with each other and also open up other forest areas.

Despite the current preparations, some leisure time activities like cross-country skiing might not be fully enjoyed in Harz National Park due to insufficient weather conditions. During their leisure time, hikers are advised to avoid walking on the groomed trails to prevent damage.
