In the aftermath of a fierce blaze that razed Wernigerode and caused over €2 million in damages, the investigators have found the source of the inferno. According to the authorities, the fire was sparked by a technical mishap, specifically electrical energy. There is no indication of any outsiders being involved.

Earlier statements had estimated the damage at €1 million. A few nights prior to Friday (24th May), a consumer market boasting a doner kiosk had met its end in this Harz region city. The entire structure was reduced to ashes. Firefighters took several hours to contain the flames.
