Harris secures broad support from Democrats for nomination as candidate

Tonight, I am proud that I have secured the broad support needed to become a candidate for our Party", Harris declared in a speech to employees of Biden's previous campaign team in Wilmington, Delaware.

Furthermore, Harris sharply criticized the 78-year-old Republican presidential candidate. With reference to her time as District Attorney in California, she said, "I have dealt with characters like Trump." Back then, she had taken on "criminals of all kinds": criminals who abused women and deceived consumers, swindlers who broke the rules to their own advantage.

Regarding the presidential election, Harris gave a fighting spirit. "We will win," she said in Wisconsin. After the "roller coaster ride" of the past few days, she personally approached the campaign team employees. "We all have mixed feelings about this - I just have to say, I love Joe Biden", she said.

The incumbent President had tuned in to the meeting - where he once again backed Harris. "She is the best," he told the campaign team. "I know the last message was surprising and hard to hear for you, but it was the right thing", he added, looking back on his decision from the previous day to withdraw from the race for the White House. The Democratic Party called on Biden to support Harris once again.

At her speech to the campaign workers, Harris also set the tone for her now expected campaign appearances. She announced that she would make the right to abortion a central part of her campaign. "We will fight for reproductive freedom - knowing that Trump, if he gets the chance, will sign a ban on abortions in every single state."

On Tuesday, Harris is expected at her first official campaign event in Milwaukee. The election in the largest city of the Wisconsin state is no accident: There, the Republican Party convention had previously taken place, where Trump was officially nominated as the presidential candidate. In the 2020 presidential election, Biden had won the contested Swing State - in November, the result in Wisconsin could be decisive for the election outcome.

Before her meeting with Biden's campaign team, Harris had already achieved an important success. Several US media reported that she had surpassed the necessary number of 1976 delegates with nearly 4000, securing her nomination as the Democrats' final nominee in the coming weeks.

The Democrats nominate their candidate at the party convention in August. The presidential election takes place on November 3.

Biden had announced on Sunday that he would forgo his candidacy for the presidential election in November due to health reasons. The 81-year-old had come under increasing criticism after a weak performance in a TV debate against Trump. Biden now supports Harris, he declared. Harris herself declared that she wanted to "earn and win" the nomination. Shortly thereafter, Harris received more and more support from her party: Several governors, congressmen, and other influential party members spoke out for the 59-year-old. Record donations also flowed into Harris' campaign fund.

Biden should return to the White House on Tuesday, according to the latest news. After his Corona infection and for the first time since withdrawing his candidacy, the President is expected to leave his beach house in Delaware in the afternoon (local time) and later arrive at the White House, as his official schedule indicates. On Monday, Biden's doctor, Kevin O'Connor, announced that the US President's condition was improving and his symptoms were "almost completely gone."

On Thursday, Biden is scheduled to meet with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in Washington, according to a US government representative. Originally, it was reported from Israel that both leaders would speak on Tuesday. Netanyahu, who arrived in Washington on Monday, is also expected to meet with Kamala Harris during this week. The meeting with Harris will be separate from the one between Biden and Netanyahu, a Harris advisor said.
