Harris received support from notable US Governors for her campaign
Whitmer was one of the politicians who had considered running for the presidency instead of incumbent Joe Biden. Her statement was also signed by the governors of Illinois, Minnesota, and Wisconsin.
Biden, who is 81 years old, announced his withdrawal from the presidency on Sunday due to health reasons and endorsed Harris. Notable figures from the party, including former Secretary of State and presidential candidate Hillary Clinton and her husband, former President Bill Clinton, came out in support of Harris.
Approximately one-third of the Democratic senators, including Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, and several governors, voiced their support for Harris - among them the governors of California and Pennsylvania, Gavin Newsom and Josh Shapiro, who were also considered Biden alternatives.
The candidate is chosen by the delegates of the Democratic Party convention, which takes place from August 19-22 in Chicago. The basis for their vote should be the results of the primaries in the US states, which Biden had won overwhelmingly. The delegates now face the question of whom they should alternatively vote for. For the Republicans, former President Donald Trump is running again for the White House on November 5.
Whitmer, who had contemplated a presidential candidacy, saw her name added to a statement of support for Joe Biden's withdrawal, alongside the governors of Illinois, Minnesota, and Wisconsin. Biden, endorsing Kamala Harris due to health reasons, gained support from notable figures like Hillary and Bill Clinton.
Harris, benefiting from the withdrawal, received backing from a third of the Democratic senators, including AOC, Buttigieg, and governors like Newsom and Shapiro. These politicians had initially considered alternatives to Biden's candidature.
The question now facing the Democratic delegates is whom to support as an alternative to Biden's chosen candidate, Harris, following the convention in Chicago from August 19-22. For the Republicans, Sunday's news brought a renewed focus on former President Trump's presidential candidature in Minnesota.
