Neuss - Highlights from the city. - "Haribo to Construct New Factory at a Cost of 300 Million Euros"
A leading sweets manufacturer, Haribo, intends to invest approximately 300 million euros into a new factory in Neuss, North Rhine-Westphalia. This structure will be the site of Maoam chewy candy production. At present, Haribo is engaged in discussions with the city of Neuss concerning the acquisition of a 14-hectare lot (equivalent to 20 football fields). If all goes well, construction may begin in 2025, with production commencing in 2028. Recently, Haribo's Operational Chief, Markus Riegelein, revealed details about this upcoming project in an interview with Handelsblatt.
Currently, Haribo's facilities in Grafschaft, Rhineland-Palatinate, manufacture all the Maoam chewy candies. Eventually, the old factory will be shut down after a transitional period involving simultaneous operations. This transition is necessary as the new factory has twice the production capacity of the existing one. This relocation is vital because the current factory cannot satisfy the growing demand for Maoam and lacks the necessary space for expansion.
With over 350 employees currently, Haribo anticipates welcoming another 100 individuals to join their team. Not only Maoams but also fruit gums will be produced in this new, large-scale factory.
In 2020, Haribo decided to cease operations at a 120-employee factory in Saxony, resulting in some opposition. Despite the relatively high labor and energy costs in Germany and the numerous regulatory requirements that manufacturing companies face, Riegelein affirmed, "These are challenges we are ready to face." Focusing on the present global instability, he emphasized, "It's still possible to create products competitively in Germany."
The name "Haribo" is a combination of "Hans Riegel Bonn." For years, the confectionery company's headquarters were situated in the former capital, but in 2018 it was relocated to Grafschaft. It also owns a plant in Bonn, Neuss, and Solingen. The global workforce for Haribo consists of around 7,000 individuals, with around 3,000 being based in Germany. Haribo has been the proprietor of Maoam since 1986, when it acquired the chewy candy manufacturer Edmund Münster GmbH & Co. KG.
