DFB Cup - "Hardly a bigger challenge": VfB welcomes Dortmund
VfB Stuttgart coach Sebastian Hoeneß is eagerly awaiting the round of 16 in the DFB Cup against Borussia Dortmund. "It will be a nice setting. We have the opportunity to show our best side. That's what we intend to do," said the 41-year-old, who has hardly any personnel problems for the clash on Wednesday (8.45pm/ZDF and Sky). Hiroki Ito, a key player, is out injured, but otherwise he has all his regulars at his disposal.
Just over three weeks ago, the surprise third-placed team in the Bundesliga won the home match against BVB in the league 2:1. "It's a team that is simply very, very good and has a very good cup history. A team that knows exactly how to play such games," said Hoeneß on Tuesday.
Due to the early cup failure of a number of first division teams, including FC Bayern Munich and RB Leipzig, the title chance for the winner of the duel seems particularly high. "There is hardly a greater challenge in this round than playing against Borussia Dortmund," warned the coach. "There is no reason to underestimate the opponent in any way based on the last Bundesliga match."
Unlike before the last Bundesliga match against Werder Bremen (2-0), Hoeneß did not guarantee the in-form striker duo of Serhou Guirassy and Deniz Undav a place in the starting eleven this time, even in view of the English week. The Swabians face Bundesliga leaders Bayer Leverkusen on Sunday (15:30/DAZN).
