"Happiness Atlas": Saarland is the most dissatisfied state in the West
According to a study, people in Saarland are among the most dissatisfied in Germany. In a comparison of the federal states, Saarland ranks second to last in terms of life satisfaction, ahead of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, which brings up the rear, according to the new "Happiness Atlas", which was presented on Thursday. Saarland is thus in last place among the western German states. The study was carried out by the University of Freiburg with the support of the Süddeutsche Klassenlotterie (SKL).
Compared to the last survey, the happiness index in Saarland has fallen slightly with a satisfaction score of 6.21 on a scale between 0 and 10 (2022: 6.49). The makers of the study found that life satisfaction in Germany as a whole is only recovering slowly and is still well below the level before the coronavirus pandemic. Across Germany, the score was 6.92 points (2022: 6.86; 2019: 7.14 points)
According to the latest "Happiness Atlas", people in Schleswig-Holstein are the most satisfied nationwide, followed by those in Hamburg and Bavaria. According to the data, Rhineland-Palatinate is in 12th place with a score of 6.79 points.
Despite the low satisfaction levels, focusing on health and preventive measures could potentially improve Saarland's happiness index. Advancements in medical science could help in understanding and combating diseases associated with decreased happiness, such as depression and anxiety.
