Work - Hanover: Record number of employees subject to compulsory insurance
The number of employees subject to compulsory insurance in the Hanover district has reached a record high, according to the employment agency. From June 2022 to the end of May 2023 alone, more than 6,000 people were added to the district's workforce who work and earn so much that they pay into the social security system, said Heike Döpke, head of Hannover's employment agency, to the Hannoversche Allgemeine Zeitung newspaper (Tuesday). Overall, the number rose to 541,165 employees subject to compulsory insurance in early summer - in 2018, the mark of half a million employees was exceeded, compared to 412,764 people in 1989.
The reason for the increase is immigration, Döpke told the newspaper. Since 2015, the total number of employees subject to compulsory insurance has risen by 11 percent - but the proportion of people with foreign passports has risen by 73 percent to a good 74,300 last year.
