2nd league - Hannover faces tough northern duel in Kiel
Second-division soccer team Hannover 96 can once again tackle the challenge of strong second-placed Holstein Kiel with Cedric Teuchert. The 26-year-old goalscorer is at least eligible for a brief appearance in Saturday evening's game (8.30pm/Sky and Sport1). "If we need him for 15 minutes, then I think he's got it in the tank," said coach Stefan Leitl on Friday.
The top scorer for 96 this season with eight goals was absent for around seven weeks due to a thigh injury. Teuchert only returned to training this week.
Leitl spoke of a very difficult away game. "Nevertheless, we are determined to take points from Kiel," he said.
Kiel are one of the surprise teams in the league. They will definitely go into the winter break in one of the two promotion places.
Holstein are rightly in second place, said Leitl. 96 are already eight points behind their last opponents of the year and must score points on Saturday above all to keep up with third place. Leitl is determined to "stay in the top flight".
Hannover have not managed a win in their last four matches. The 96ers last picked up three points in the Lower Saxony clash at the start of November with a 2-0 win against Eintracht Braunschweig. This was followed by three draws and a defeat.
Many 96 players will be missing in Kiel due to illness, including Max Besuschkow. Christopher Scott had to pull out of training after taking a blow to the back. Central defender Phil Neumann has also returned to training alongside Teuchert. He had previously been bothered by back problems.
