Hannover defeats Braunschweig 2:0 in the Lower Saxony derby
Hannover 96 further exacerbated Eintracht Braunschweig's sporting crisis with an unchallenged victory in the Lower Saxony derby. The 2-0 (2-0) win on Sunday kept coach Stefan Leitl's side third in the table and within touching distance of the direct promotion places in Bundesliga 2, while their long-term rivals remain bottom of the table with five points after twelve matchdays. Fabian Kunze (12th minute) and Marcel Halstenberg (42nd) scored from the penalty spot for the hosts in front of a heated crowd.
Hannover remained in control throughout the match. After around 55 minutes, Eintracht midfielder Jannis Nikolaou also received a yellow card for a harsh tackle on Enzo Leopold. Braunschweig, who were outnumbered, did not create a single scoring chance in the entire match. Substitute attacker Nicolo Tresoldi (88) scored another goal, but it was ruled out for offside.
Due to the use of pyrotechnics and the resulting thick clouds of smoke, the match, which is considered one of the most explosive derbies in Germany, was kicked off around five minutes later. Referee Sascha Stegemann interrupted the match twice more during the course of the game because Eintracht supporters threw red flares and firecrackers towards the pitch. Eintracht fans also dismantled some rows of seats and threw them from the upper tier onto the lower tier.
Hannover 96's triumph in the Lower Saxony derby against Eintracht Braunschweig, a 2:0 victory, strengthened their position in Bundesliga 2. Despite performing poorly, Eintracht struggled to create any goal-scoring opportunities against Hanover's dominant defense in Bundesliga 2's Bundesliga 2.
