Hannover 96 spoiled SSV Jahn Regensburg's comeback bid in the 2. Bundesliga. The Lower Saxony promotion hopefuls comfortably defeated the league returnees from Bavaria 2:0 (2:0) in the season opener. Nicolo Tresoldi (11') and Jannik Dehm (23') scored early goals to secure a clear victory. The hosts dominated the game from the start, allowing their opponents too much space in midfield and on the left defensive side in the first half-hour. Hannover capitalized on these opportunities to score their two goals. Towards the end of the first half, Regensburg began to threaten Hannover's goal, testing Ron-Robert Zieler. After the break, Hannover continued to control the game against the industrious Regensburg side. Just seconds after the restart, Harvard Nielsen's acrobatic effort was saved by Regensburg's Felix Gebhardt. Sei Muroya (70') came closest to scoring with a shot that hit the crossbar. Under coach Stefan Leitl, the team did just enough to secure their first win of the season, which was never in doubt.

In contrast to their dominance in the first half, SSV Jahn Regensburg showed improved pressure in the upper Palatinate's half during the second, poseing a threat to Hannover's goal. Despite Regensburg's improved performance in the second half, the results from the upper Palatinate's territory remained the same, with Hannover still maintaining their 2-0 lead.
