Culture - Hannah Arendt Prize awarded to Masha Gessen
The controversial presentation of the Hannah Arendt Prize for Political Thought to Masha Gessen took place on Saturday in Bremen in front of around 50 guests. The event, originally planned for Friday in the town hall, had been canceled following criticism of Gessen's comments and was now held on a smaller scale at a different venue.
The venue, which had already been changed, was moved again at short notice on Saturday morning. The award ceremony now took place in a small event room in the Steintor district. Four police officers secured the event outside the door.
With the postponement, the sponsoring association reacted to the withdrawal of the Heinrich Böll Foundation and the Bremen Senate from the award ceremony. This was triggered by statements made by Gessen in an article in the US magazine "The New Yorker", in which Gessen is said to have compared the situation in Gaza with the Jewish ghettos in occupied Europe. The jury's decision in favor of Masha Gessen was made in early summer. The decisive factor was Gessen's journalistic commitment to reporting on Russia, it was said at the time.
