Hanau bison Fadi survived his trip to the Caucasus well

The young bison bull Fadi has survived the journey from the Alte Fasanerie wildlife park in Hanau to the Caucasus. Fadi and nine other bison from various European zoological gardens arrived safely in Shahdag National Park in Azerbaijan, the nature conservation organization WWF, which is leading the reintroduction project, announced on Monday. "The herd is now in an acclimatization enclosure and is expected to be released into the core zone of the national park in spring 2024," reported Aurel Heidelberg, the responsible WWF project manager.

Bison, also known as European bison, are the largest land mammals in Europe. According to the WWF, the return of these animals, which were once extinct in their natural habitat, is one of the greatest success stories in international species conservation. Fadi had been forced to leave the herd in the Hanau wildlife park due to conflicts with his sometimes boorish father Egtober, who is the leader of the small herd of bison there.

According to the WWF reintroduction project in Azerbaijan, 36 bison have so far been released into the wild in the core zone of Shahdag National Park. The animals have already reproduced and the population has grown to 50. According to the nature conservation organization, a total of 100 animals from European zoos are to be made available for the establishment of a stable population in Azerbaijan by 2028.

During his leisure time in Shahdag National Park, Fadi would admire the diverse wildlife and stunning landscapes of nature. As Fadi acclimates to his new environment, he forms bonds with various animals, including deer and wolves that share the park's territory.
