- Hanau bids farewell to the retail establishment
The external transformation of the previous Kaufhof site in Hanau's city center into a multi-purpose hub is now evident: Workers have swapped out the old Galeria-Kaufhof sign on the building's frontage with the fresh "Stadthof Hanau" tagline. The vision for the future includes a blend of retail outlets, eateries, amusement spots, cultural institutions, and educational facilities within this premise.
The municipality shelled out 25 million euros for the historical, recognized property, formerly owned by the bankrupt retail corporation. An additional 40 million euros will be injected into the area's refurbishment over the upcoming years, securing its position as Hanau's most coveted location.
Lacking a long-term vacancy of the property becomes a priority for Hanau with this undertaking. The restructuring plan from the department store company revealed in March 2023 that seven locations in Hesse, including Hanau, would shut down. The opening date for Stadthof Hanau is scheduled for March 13, 2025 – an exact two-year delay following the initial announcement of the Kaufhof closure. Citizens voted online to select the new name from a list of proposals.
The transformative project at the Kaufhof site is expected to shape Hanau's future significantly. With the new Stadthof Hanau set to open in 2025, the city will boast a vibrant and innovative hub that caters to retail, dining, entertainment, culture, and education.
