Environment - Hamburg's water supplier presents Water Report 2023
How have precipitation, groundwater levels and consumption figures developed in Hamburg? The municipal utility Hamburg Wasser provides answers to these questions once a year when a hydrological year (from November to October) has come to an end. Today (10.00 a.m.) is that time again.
Hamburg Wasser boss Ingo Hannemann also wants to take a look underground: How does groundwater form anew and what role does the subsurface play in this? And what challenges exist in the search for suitable well locations in order to secure the supply of fresh drinking water for people in the future? Climate scientist Daniela Jacob will also report on current climate developments with regard to the water supply in northern Germany.
A year ago, Hamburg Wasser gave a mixed review of the hydrological year. It was characterized by long dry spells, record heatwaves and a wet winter. "We can see that the extremes are increasing," was Hannemann's conclusion at the time.

The water report by Hamburg Wasser reveals important insights about the relationship between precipitation, groundwater levels, and consumption in Hamburg. Despite the challenges posed by extreme weather events such as long dry spells and record heatwaves, the city's water supply has remained resilient. However, as climate scientist Daniela Jacob will discuss, climate developments continue to present new challenges for securing fresh drinking water in northern Germany.
