Animals - Hamburg's polar bear turns one year old: celebration with salmon cake
Delicious food and new toys: Little polar bear Anouk from Hamburg's Hagenbeck Zoo celebrated her first birthday early on Monday. The zookeepers had draped the surprises in the sea of ice for the polar bear and her mother first thing in the morning. "The cake consists of a mixture of fish, mince, salmon oil, gelatine and a little cream to hold everything together," said zoo vet Michael Flügger. Anouk was born on December 19, 2022 in the birthing den of the polar bear enclosure. Since then, mother Victoria has taken great care of her offspring, the zoo vet added.
This was also evident on Monday in the Arctic Ocean: mother and cub ate the multi-tiered cake amicably and without any arguments. Immediately afterwards, Anouk threw herself onto her toys and into the water, which was around five to eight degrees cold. The curious, boisterous and energetic polar bear girl was not only given a bright orange fire hose tied into a cube, but also a large white round buoy. Throughout the morning, Anouk repeatedly jumped onto the two toys floating in the moat, dived down, threw them through the air and jumped back on again.
Anouk's birth marked the first time in 21 years that a polar bear had been born at Hagenbeck Zoo. Victoria - her mother - had last been born there. Anouk's father Kap has already left the zoo.

The colorful toys provided a source of joy for the playful polar bear Anouk after her birthday celebration. Victoria, the experienced animal keeper and Anouk's mother, watched proudly as her offspring enjoyed her new toys. The Hagenbeck Zoo, known for its diverse animal population, has a long history with polar bears, as seen with Anouk's birth and Victoria's previous life there. The sea of ice in the Arctic Ocean setting of the polar bear enclosure served as an imaginative backdrop for Anouk's birthday party.
