- Hamburg's Chocoversum attracts hundreds of thousands - a record
Nearby the Hamburg Warehouse District**, since 2011, everything revolves around chocolate in a historic building: the Chocoversum. Last year, around 215,000 people visited this privately-run museum, a record. Even now, during the summer holidays, the house is very well-visited.
"During peak times, we're sold out at least 24 hours in advance. We're slowly reaching our capacity limits," said museum spokeswoman Ulrike Albrecht. Partly, the team can compensate this with extended opening hours. Whether the 2023 record will be broken, she couldn't say yet. But: "Currently, we're definitely on a similar course as last year, so that's quite possible. Of course, we'll only know for sure in early January."
Hands-on is taken literally
The private museum can only be explored with a guide, with 32 people able to participate in a tour at a time. And hands-on is taken literally here, as everyone can decorate their own chocolate bar in the chocolate workshop, using either milk, dark, or white chocolate. But it's not just about tasting, it's also about learning - from cultivation to harvest, export, sustainability, and the refinement of cocoa mass into delicate chocolate.
According to the city of Hamburg, there are around 60 museums along the Elbe that attract more than 1.4 million visitors a year. Around 40 of these are privately owned, as the cultural authority knows.
Visitors interested in diverse attractions might also enjoy exploring Hamburg's other museums. There are approximately 60 museums located along the Elbe, attracting over 1.4 million visitors annually.
For those with a sweet tooth, they might be interested to learn that apart from the Chocoversum, these museums also include a variety of historical and artistic institutions readily accessible to the public.
