Upcoming Season: 2024/25 - Hamburg's Bundesliga handball squad experiences a small sense of relief.
After an intense 6-hour arbitration court session, tension among the representatives at the Handball Bundesliga club HSV Hamburg has eased. The team can now continue playing in the league for the 2024/25 season after the three-member panel issued a favorable decision. However, the club must meet an additional condition by June 5th, according to the league association HBL.
The club's managing director, Sebastian Frecke, expressed relief and satisfaction, "The verdict is definitely a victory for us, and the tension from the past few days has now subsided."
André van de Velde, who represented HSV Hamburg at the hearing as a lawyer, stated, "The court carefully considered our arguments as well as those of the HBL and weighed them thoroughly. It's great that we'll receive the license, but there's also an extra requirement for the pre-financing of the upcoming season."
If this security measure, which is meant to cover future financial risks, isn't met by the due date, the license will not be granted, and HSV Hamburg will face relegation. The exact amount of the security measure was not disclosed.
Following the verdict, Frecke immediately initiated the necessary actions to fulfill the condition before the deadline. He showed confidence in their success by saying, "We'll do everything in our power to meet the requirement by next Wednesday."
The final decision will come after the last league matchday on June 2nd. This situation still hangs over the head of the current table leader, Bergischer HC, and legal actions could still be taken.
The HBL initially denied the playing permit to the 9th-place team from Hamburg due to not meeting a time-sensitive condition. But late submission of the financial gap closure proof triggered the club's appeal. The HBL presidium, however, rejected this, leading to the arbitration court's decision.
