Hamburger SV and FC St. Pauli away in the round of 16
Second-division soccer teams Hamburger SV and FC St. Pauli have to play away from home in the DFB Cup round of 16. HSV will travel to their league rivals Hertha BSC in Berlin, while the city rivals and league leaders from the Kiez will visit south-west regional league side FC Homburg. This was the result of the draw on Sunday at the German Football Museum in Dortmund. The matches will take place on December 5 and 6.
HSV coach Tim Walter had wished for a home game for the draw on Saturday evening after the 2-0 win against 1. FC Magdeburg in the league. This did not come true. However, his team proved on matchday three that they can beat Hertha. The Hamburg side defeated the relegated Bundesliga side 3:0 at home in the Volksparkstadion.
FC St. Pauli have the supposedly easier draw. Homburg are the only fourth-division side in the last 16 after beating second-division side SpVgg Greuther Fürth 2-1 on Tuesday.
"I've already played with some of the Homburg players. They also play a good role in the league, are currently third and should actually be treated like a third division team," said coach Fabian Hürzeler (30). "They proved in the cup that they can hurt any opponent."
Hamburger SV's upcoming DFB Cup match against Hertha BSC in Berlin will be a challenging away game, given their victory over the Bundesliga side 3-0 at home earlier this season. On the other hand, FC St. Pauli, with a supposedly easier draw against fourth-division side FC Homburg, will need to be wary as Homburg proved their cup capabilities by defeating another second-division team, SpVgg Greuther Fürth.
