Tennis action and updates. - Hamburg will not host a women's tennis event in 2023.
This year, due to a packed Olympic calendar and the unavailability of a fitting location, no Women's Tennis Tournament is scheduled to occur in Hamburg. Instead, the organizers have opted to grant the WTA-250 classification event's license to the Romanian city of Iasi, as declared on Thursday.
Sandra Reichel, Tournament Director, expressed her disappointment, stating, "This year is quite exceptional, and we had to make the hard decision to temporarily cease the tournament - to prevent losing the license. We're actively discussing potential long-term options for Hamburg to host a top-notch women's tennis tournament in the future."
With distinct organizers for the men's and women's tennis tournaments in Hamburg and the Avenue Johannes Brahms in Hamburg Rothenbaum being unsuitable, Reichel and her team sought an alternative. Nonetheless, their plans to shift the event to the Hamburg Stadtpark proved unsuccessful.
Previously, the Women's Tournament, which had three-time Grand Slam winner Angelique Kerber's confirmation, was slated to take place from July 21st to 26th, just prior to the Olympic Games in Paris. However, the Men's Tournament will go on as planned from July 15th through 21st at the Rothenbaum. Olympic gold medalist Alexander Zverev has also accepted his participation in the event.

Despite Hamburg not hosting a WTA tennis event in 2023, Germany continues to be a significant hub for tennis with the ATP tournament scheduled to take place in the city. The ATP Hamburg Open will feature Olympic gold medalist Alexander Zverev from July 15th to 21st at the Rothenbaum.
Hamburg initially intended to host both the men's and women's WTA and ATP tournaments, but due to various challenges, only the men's tournament will proceed as planned. The WTA-250 classification event, originally scheduled for July 21st to 26th, will take place in Iasi, Romania instead.
Recalling past achievements, three-time Grand Slam winner Angelique Kerber was set to compete in the women's tournament in Hamburg. However, circumstances led to the event's relocation, keeping Germany and its tennis fans connected to international tennis competitions through the ATP Hamburg Open.
