Voting Processes - Hamburg votes for members of the European Parliament and district assemblies.
On Sunday, over 1.3 million people in Hamburg were encouraged to head to the polls to vote for the European Parliament and their seven local district assemblies. As many as 34 parties were competing in the European election, while 61 different ballots were available for the local district elections in the 54 districts of the city. Voting was open from 8:00 am to 6:00 pm, and there were well over a thousand polling stations across the city. Although the official result of the European election was scheduled to be announced in the evening, the count for the district assemblies wouldn't commence until the following day.
Almost a third of the eligible voters had already made their selections and cast their votes by Friday evening. The state electoral officer announced that a total of 377,000 ballot papers had been handed out. This was a jump of more than five percentage points compared to the previous election in 2019.
In 2019, there was a 61.9% turnout for the European election within Hamburg, while 58% of the eligible voters participated in the district assembly elections.
