Handball - Hamburg team reaches cup quarter-finals
The HSV Hamburg handball team has reached the quarter-finals of the DHB Cup. They beat their Bundesliga rivals ThSV Eisenach 31:28 (14:16) at home on Tuesday. Hamburg's best scorers in the round of 16 were Casper Mortensen and Dani Baijens with eight goals each. Manuel Zehnder also scored eight times for Eisenach.
In view of the tense personnel situation, Lukas Ossenkopp, who had actually been promoted to the coaching staff, and the 19-year-old young center Tobias Pachmann were in the squad for the hosts, who had previously celebrated just one win in six competitive games. Almost eight weeks after breaking his throwing hand, Baijens was back on the HSVH bench.
Hamburg coach Torsten Jansen then sent the Dutch international onto the pitch for the first time in the 21st minute. The playmaker's agility was also urgently needed, as the visitors had turned a 5:9 (14') into an 11:10 (23') thanks to their extremely offensive defense.
After the break, Hamburg opted for a seventh outfield player in order to play better in the visitors' defense. Mortensen put the Hanseatic club back in front with a seven-meter penalty to make it 22:21 (44') and the strong Baijens stretched the gap to 23:21 (45'). ThSV closed the gap to 25:25 (51'), but HSVH had the better end. The Hanseatic team will find out their opponent in the quarter-finals in the draw on Thursday.
