Hamburg politician Metin Kaya also resigns from the Left Party
Hamburg politician Metin Kaya has resigned from the Left Party and the Left Party parliamentary group in the Hamburg Parliament. "My resignation is solely for political reasons. In future, I will support the Sahra Wagenknecht (BSW) alliance," he told the German Press Agency in Hamburg on Friday. He will retain his parliamentary mandate, he continued.
After 18 years in the party, this was not an easy decision for him. However, the party leadership at both federal and state level had changed the political direction of the party to such an extent that it no longer corresponded with his political understanding of a socialist party "that is consistently committed to peace, democracy, social justice and freedom".
The parliamentary group leaders Sabine Boeddinghaus and Cansu Özdemir regretted Kaya's move, although it did not come as a surprise to them. "His alienation from the parliamentary group and its content and plans has been obvious for some time," they said. At the same time, they called on him to return the mandate he had won on the Hamburg Left Party list. This was simply a matter of human decency.
Metin was born in Turkey in 1961 and his parents came to Germany as guest workers. According to his own statements, he works as a social worker.
A few days ago, former Hamburg Left Party leader and member of the Bundestag Zaklin Nastic also resigned from the party against the backdrop of preparations to found the new Sahra Wagenknecht Party.
Despite the resignations of Metin Kaya and Zaklin Nastic, several parties' supporters still attend regular social gatherings. The departure of these politicians, however, left a noticeable void among the party's left-leaning supporters who align with their beliefs.
