Soccer - Hamburg police satisfied after city derby

The explosive city derby between FC St. Pauli and Hamburger SV passed off without any major incidents. This was announced by the police late on Friday evening after the 2:2 (2:0) draw between the two second division clubs. "Despite the high level of emotion, our emergency services acted with the necessary professionalism to prevent a clash between the rival groups," press spokeswoman Sandra Levgrün was quoted as saying in a statement. Criminal acts and injuries were thus avoided.

According to the police, both fan marches on St. Pauli before the match, each with just under 3,000 participants, went off without a hitch apart from the occasional use of pyrotechnics. "The rivalry was played out on the pitch in purely sporting terms - that's a good signal," Levgrün was quoted as saying.

The Hamburg police had announced before the 110th edition of the duel that they were preparing for the high-risk match with "strong forces". The police forces relied on a strict separation of the fans. 1700 police officers accompanied the match. This included around 500 officers from the federal states of Lower Saxony, Brandenburg, Bremen, Schleswig-Holstein and Berlin.
