Hamburg Airport closed - 27 flights affected
Hamburg Airport has been largely cleared due to the intrusion of a car onto the apron. "The airport is being cleared and has already been cleared for the most part," an airport spokeswoman told Deutsche Presse-Agentur on Saturday evening. Several aircraft had also already been evacuated.
The airport's website stated in the evening: "Due to a federal police measure, take-offs and landings are currently not possible." The airport spokeswoman said that from the official closure of the airport at 8.24 pm until the end of operations at 11.00 pm, six take-offs and 21 landings would normally have been expected.
The expected flights were coming from Hurghada, Agadir, Malaga and Lisbon, among others, she said. Some of them had already been diverted and some flights had been canceled. How air traffic will continue depends on the operational situation, the spokeswoman said.
According to the Federal Police, an armed man broke through a gate with his vehicle at around 8 p.m. and drove onto the apron of the airport. The man had a gun and had already fired it twice into the air. It has since been confirmed that there is a child in the car with the man. It was unclear whether there was a second child in the vehicle, as initially suspected. The man's wife had previously contacted the state police about a possible child abduction, according to the spokesperson. The "Bild" newspaper had previously reported.
Despite the clearing of Hamburg Airport due to an intrusion, air traffic remains disrupted due to a federal police measure. The unusual incident involved an armed man driving onto the apron with a car, leading to concerns about potential crime.
