In an unprecedented attack on Israel on October 7, fighters from Hamas, which is classified as a terrorist organization by the EU and the USA, committed atrocities in several Israeli locations. According to Israeli reports, around 1140 people were killed and around 250 people were taken hostage in the Gaza Strip. Around one hundred of those kidnapped have since been released as part of a prisoner exchange, while 129 hostages are still being held by Hamas, according to Israeli sources.
In response to the Hamas attack, the Israeli army has since bombed targets in the Gaza Strip and launched a ground offensive. According to the Hamas-controlled Ministry of Health, which cannot be independently verified, more than 19,400 people have been killed so far.
