Extremism - Hamas members sporadically also in Lower Saxony
The Islamist terrorist organization Hamas also has several members in Lower Saxony. This is according to an answer from the Ministry of the Interior to a question from CDU member of state parliament Christian Calderone.
It states that there are "isolated supporters and functionaries of Hamas" in the state. The number of Hamas members and supporters in the focus of the security authorities in Lower Saxony is in the mid double-digit range.
The ministry went on to explain that the police were holding cooperation talks with individual pro-Palestinian organizations. However, this does not apply to organizations that support Hamas. The state government does not maintain contacts with public representatives of the Palestinian territories.
Federal Interior Minister Nancy Faeser (SPD) had banned Hamas and the Palestinian network Samidoun at the beginning of November. This followed the brutal terrorist attacks by Hamas in Israel on October 7, in which more than 1200 people were killed.
