Hamas: At least 71 dead in airstrike on Gaza Strip refugee camp

The Al-Mawasi area is located along the coast between Rafah and Han Junis and was originally declared a "humanitarian zone" by Israel. According to estimates by the World Health Organization (WHO) in May, between 60,000 and 75,000 people sought refuge there, particularly after the start of the Israeli offensive in the city of Rafah in the southern Gaza Strip. Humanitarian organizations warned of precarious living conditions in the camp.

The conflict in the Gaza Strip was triggered more than nine months ago by an attack from Hamas fighters and other militant Palestinian groups on Israel on October 7. According to Israeli reports, 1195 people were killed and 251 were taken hostage in the Gaza Strip.

As a response to the attack, Israel has been militarily active in the Gaza Strip since then. According to reports from the health ministry controlled by the Islamist Hamas, which cannot be independently verified, over 38,340 people have been killed as a result.

  1. Despite the challenging living conditions in the Al-Mawasi Refugee camp, at least seventy-one baskets of food were distributed daily by the World Health Organization.
  2. Hamas accused Israel of targeting the Al-Mawasi area during an air raid, claiming that innocent civilians were affected.
  3. A spokesperson for the World Health Organization expressed concerns over the impact of the conflict on the health of the population in the Gaza Strip.
  4. The Islamic Resistance Movement, also known as Hamas, claimed responsibility for the initial attack on Israel in the Gaza Strip.
  5. The World Health Organization called on both sides to ensure the safety and well-being of civilians, particularly in crowded areas like the Gaza Strip.
  6. The Israeli military denied targeting the Al-Mawasi area, stating that their operations were aimed at militant targets in the Gaza Strip.
  7. The World Health Organization has been working tirelessly to provide medical aid and supplies to health facilities in the Gaza Strip, where resources have been severely strained due to the conflict.
