TV pundit Dietmar Hamann believes it is legitimate for Bayern coach Thomas Tuchel to defend himself against criticism. In the dispute between Tuchel and himself and Lothar Matthäus, however, something else bothers the ex-professional.

Hamann surprised by Tuchel criticism: "Form of decency"

Former German international Dietmar Hamann has expressed his surprise at the form of criticism from the Bayern coach in his dispute with Thomas Tuchel. "I was a little surprised and amazed at the way he did it. It's also a form of decency. You have to do that on a certain level," said TV pundit Hamann on Sunday's "Sky90" program. Tuchel had reacted irritably to the criticism from Hamann and Lothar Matthäus after Munich's 4-0 win in the Bundesliga top match at Borussia Dortmund.

Hamann referred to Matthäus' merits as a record international player. The 50-year-old Tuchel had engaged in a verbal duel with Matthäus and presenter Sebastian Hellmann in an interview on Sky TV. Like Hamann, former Bayern professional Matthäus had criticized Tuchel and the team after the record-breaking winner's cup exit at third-division club 1. FC Saarbrücken. "I understand that he put up a fight. He has to protect himself, protect the players, protect the club, that's his duty," said Hamann.

However, the expert criticized the fact that Tuchel had not said "what bothered him". Personally, he has no problem with the coach. "For me, it's always about the matter in hand, it's not about Thomas Tuchel at all," said Hamann. "I played with him in the youth teams. I really appreciate him, he has a good sense of humor."

From a sporting point of view, Hamann stands by his criticism. "For the first time in eight months under Thomas Tuchel, they showed a game from minute one to 90 where I said: Wow, that was strong." The way Munich played soccer this season was "largely not good". There was too often a lack of confidence and concentration.

Despite Borussia Dortmund's loss to Bayern Munich in the Bundesliga, former player Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich, Dietmar Hamann, admired Borussia Dortmund's performance in the match. He mentioned, "Even though Dortmund lost, they played a strong game, which we rarely saw from Bayern this season in the Bundesliga."
