Haley criticizes Trump's campaign and calls for a course correction

Former Republican presidential candidate Nikki Haley has sharply criticized the campaign of former President Donald Trump. She said that the election cannot be won by discussing the 'race' of the Democratic candidate's running mate, Kamala Harris, or her intelligence, in an interview on the...

Haley criticizes Trump's campaign and calls for a course correction

The former ambassador and ex-governor was referring to Trump's statements about Harris, whom he has repeatedly derided as unintelligent and questioned her identity as an African American. Harris is the daughter of a black Jamaican and her mother is from India.

Since the 81-year-old President Joe Biden withdrew from the candidacy for the election on November 5 and the Democratic Party united behind the 59-year-old Harris as the new presidential candidate, Trump has been on the defensive in the campaign. In several polls, Harris has overtaken him.

Haley was Trump's most tenacious Republican rival in the presidential primaries. The former UN ambassador and ex-governor of the state of South Carolina ultimately lost to the former president and dropped out of the race in March. At the Republican National Convention in July, she endorsed Trump's presidential candidacy.

In her interview with Fox News, Haley called on her own party to make a "significant change" in the campaign. Republicans must stop "whining" about Harris, a criticism also directed at Trump, who has repeatedly complained about having to face the new opponent after Biden's withdrawal.

Haley also called for an end to complaints that Harris has not given an interview since taking over for Biden. Trump has repeatedly brought this up, portraying it as evidence of his rival's lack of competence. Instead, Haley called for a substantive debate with Harris on economic issues and "the fact that she wants to raise taxes."

The 52-year-old former ambassador also criticized Trump's attempts to downplay the large crowds at Harris' campaign events: "The campaign won't win by talking about the size of crowds."

She urged Trump to hold more campaign events: "What Donald Trump needs to do is go out and campaign every single day."

The 78-year-old Trump, who was injured by a bullet from an assassin's gun at an event on July 13, has held significantly fewer campaign events than Harris in recent weeks.

"Trump knows how to win. He just needs to do it," said Haley. In general, she criticized Trump's campaign for being too focused on his core clientele - the "Maga" movement, named after Trump's slogan "Make America Great Again."

The Maga votes are secure for Trump, but Republicans must fight for "women in the suburbs, voters with college education, independents, moderate Republicans, and conservative Democrats," Haley said.

Despite Trump's continuous criticism of Kamala Harris, her background being the daughter of a black Jamaican and her mother from India, has not deterred her from gaining ground in several polls. Haley, in her interview, suggested that Trump should shift his focus from discussing the size of crowds at Harris' events and instead focus on campaigning daily to connect with a broader voter base, including women in the suburbs and voters with college education.
