Bundesliga - Hainer on Müller's future at Bayern: "Can go relatively quickly"
Following the contract extension with goalkeeper Manuel Neuer (37), club president Herbert Hainer has also held out the prospect of an agreement with Thomas Müller (34) in the near future. "Thomas knows exactly what he has in FC Bayern, and we know what we have in Thomas. I can also imagine that it can happen relatively quickly," said the president and chairman of the supervisory board on Sunday on "Bild-TV".
Müller's contract expires at the end of the season. Captain Neuer's contract was extended by a further year until June 30, 2025 following his successful comeback from a complicated leg fracture a few days ago. Müller's contract would also run for the same period. "Thomas is an absolutely deserving player. We all want Thomas to finish his career at Bayern Munich. We are in talks with him and I very much hope that Thomas Müller will stay with us," said Hainer.
Home-grown Müller has spent his entire professional career with the German record champions. He has won the treble twice together with companion Neuer (2013, 2020). However, unlike Neuer, the attacking player is no longer a regular under coach Thomas Tuchel.
The international had announced his intention to continue his playing career beyond the coming summer. He could move on a free transfer at the end of the season. When asked about this, Hainer said that he would "of course not like" to see Müller in the shirt of another club. "But I'm convinced that won't happen either," said the president. Instead, the club's wish is to retain "an icon" like Müller in some capacity beyond his professional career.
