Hainer hopes for a European Championship summer fairytale under Nagelsmann
Bayern President Herbert Hainer has wished former coach Julian Nagelsmann every success for next year's European Championship at home. "I would like to thank Julian Nagelsmann for his time at FC Bayern Munich and for the 2022 championship," said Hainer on Sunday at the annual general meeting of the German serial soccer champions.
"We wish him all the best with the national team. Of course, we all hope for a European Championship 2024 that is in no way inferior to the 2006 World Cup." At the 2006 World Cup, the German national team ensured the famous "summer fairytale" at the home tournament - even without a title.
FC Bayern parted ways with 36-year-old Nagelsmann prematurely in March after less than two of the five years of his contract. Thomas Tuchel took over. There were also words of thanks for former board members Oliver Kahn and Hasan Salihamidzic, who the club parted ways with at the end of May.
They had come to the conclusion that something had to change, said the 69-year-old Hainer. FC Bayern had celebrated great successes with both of them as players and board members. "Oliver Kahn and Hasan Salihamidzic will of course remain icons of FC Bayern," said Hainer.
In the hall, he also announced the club's membership record of 316,000 and the club's record turnover of 882 million euros.
The President also had words of praise for the long-standing management figures Uli Hoeneß and Karl-Heinz Rummenigge. The word of the supervisory board members still has a decisive influence, he said. "FC Bayern has two absolute world-class players as its top advisors. They dream of this from Milan to Madrid to Manchester," said Hainer. The members gave the club icons a huge round of applause.
As head of the club, Hainer set the twelfth consecutive championship as the goal for the current season. If only because of the fans, who are the twelfth man. "Let's continue to write history together," Hainer shouted into the hall.
During the Annual General Meeting, Hainer expressed his hope for a successful Euro 2024 campaign for Nagelsmann with the national team, adding that they all yearn for an event as memorable as the 2006 World Cup. Despite parting ways with Nagelsmann ahead of schedule, FC Bayern Munich continues to hold him in high regard.
