Hacker Attacks: Ticketmaster Verifies Blackmailing Incident
There's a notorious hacker group named "Shinyhunters" that's claiming responsibility for stealing data from a staggering 560 million individuals. The unfortunate victim of this attack is the American ticket seller Ticketmaster. Ticketmaster has admitted to having experienced some issues.
The American concert ticket seller, Ticketmaster, has acknowledged reports of a cyber attack that could affect 560 million consumers. On Friday, the parent company of Ticketmaster, Live Nation Entertainment, informed the US stock exchange regulator about this data breach. The company disclosed that they recognized the hacker attack on May 20th and hired expert firms for an assessment.
The hacker group ShinyHunters revealed in the Dark Web that they had mounted a cyber attack on Ticketmaster and were offering the personal data of 560 million individuals for sale, including their names, addresses, and credit card details. The group demanded a ransom amounting to $500,000 (€460,000).
Live Nation stated, "We are taking steps to reduce risks for our users and the company, and have informed law enforcement authorities and are collaborating with them." The incident is not expected to significantly impact the company's overall business or financial situation, according to them.
The Australian government revealed on Thursday that an investigation into the cyber attack has been launched. The FBI is also willing to lend a hand.
Additional attacks
In 2020, ShinyHunters caused an uproar when, as per the US Justice Department, they released massive amounts of customer data from over 60 companies. In January, a French member of the group was sentenced to three years in prison and a fine of five million dollars in Seattle.
Meanwhile, it emerged that the Australian ticket seller Ticketek had also been victimized by a cyber attack. The company has not commented on the scope of the data breach, while the Australian government said that "several Australians" could be affected.
Ticketmaster was acquired by Live Nation in 2010 and has since grown into a global force in the live event industry. Ticketmaster has been criticized in the US for years regarding the service fees and ticket costs. The US Justice Department recently accused Ticketmaster and Live Nation of exploiting their dominant market position to elevate ticket prices and eliminate competitors.
