Darja Varfolomeev failed to retain her all-around championship win from the previous year at the German Gymnastics Championships. The 17-year-old prodigy took home just three out of the four possible decisions on Friday at Frankfurt/Main. While she dominated with the clubs despite a device mishap and with the hoop and ribbon, German four-event champion Margarita Kolosov from Potsdam claimed gold with the ball.
In the previous year's championships in Düsseldorf, Varfolomeev won all five titles in both the all-around and individual apparatus finals. Born in Russia, she repeated her impressive performance at the World Championships in Spain. It was the first time since 2011 when Evgenia Kanaeva of Russia won gold in all individual events at the World Championships.
As the day before, Varfolomeev faced errors in her apparatus finals performances. She lost her grip on the ball during her closing routine and received a deduction of 34.200 points, leaving Kolosov with the opportunity to grab her first-place win with a score of 35.250. In the clubs apparatus, Varfolomeev again lost to Kolosov with 34.550 points. Despite this, Varfolomeev excelled in the ribbon and beam events, securing 35.200 and 37.050 points, respectively.
