Günther open to asylum procedures in third countries
Schleswig-Holstein's Minister President Daniel Günther has expressed his openness to asylum procedures in third countries outside of Europe. The CDU politician told Deutschlandfunk radio on Wednesday that he believes this is sensible if you have countries that guarantee procedures based on the rule of law. People with prospects of staying could then make their way to Europe. It would not contradict humanitarian principles to spare those people without prospects of asylum the dangerous journey to Europe.
According to a resolution passed by the federal and state governments on Tuesday night, the federal government should examine whether asylum procedures can also be carried out outside Europe in future "in compliance with the Geneva Refugee Convention and the European Convention on Human Rights". The SPD, Greens and FDP had already committed to this in their coalition agreement, albeit only for exceptional cases. According to the Ministry of the Interior, the review is already underway.
Refugees seeking asylum could potentially benefit from the implementation of asylum procedures in third countries, as suggested by Günther. His proposal aligns with countries that guarantee procedures based on the rule of law, allowing individuals with prospects of staying to safely migrate towards Europe.
