National squad - Gündogan's distress call: "Assist us, please"

DFB-Captain Ilkay Gündogan sent out an appeal to German football followers ahead of the beginning of the Home-EM. "We have the opportunity to succeed on various fronts at this home European Championship. As cordial hosts, as an inclusive society. And ideally, eventually, on the field. Please assist us in realizing our desire TOGETHER!" Gündogan penned in Bild to the fans.

"We're living in times when barriers are getting constructed more and more. People have stopped listening to one another. In our society, there's a divide," remarked the 33-year-old Barcelona midfielder. "We, as a team, aim to unite our country during the next four weeks. Promote cohesion. So individuals can be proud of their German national team and be warm and welcoming towards the countless visitors who'll soon flock to our stunning nation."

It's a matter of pride for him to lead Germany as the head captain with a background in migration onto the field at a significant tournament. The team is thriving due to "[being] influenced by so many different cultures and countries."
