Crime - Gun and knife ban zone in Mannheim in force
After Stuttgart, the carrying of weapons and knives is now also prohibited in certain areas of Mannheim, Baden-Württemberg's second largest city. According to information provided on Friday, anyone who violates this ban can expect a fine of up to 10,000 euros. Any weapons and knives found can be confiscated.
The ban applies on the nights of Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays from 8 p.m. the evening before until 6 a.m. According to the Weapons Act, you are not allowed to have any (alarm) firearms, weapons that appear to be firearms, cutting, thrusting and stabbing weapons or stun guns with you anyway. The Mannheim ordinance also applies to knives with a fixed or lockable blade longer than four centimetres.
The weapons and knives ban zone extends across Alter Messplatz including pedestrian walkways to the Neckar, the Kurpfalzbrücke, parts of the squares, Willy-Brandt-Platz at the main railway station, Bismarckplatz and Friedrichsplatz at the water tower. The city published the announcement in the official gazette on Thursday.
The background to the measure is that the number of knife attacks had risen in the summer. The city council and police want to improve the feeling of safety with the weapons and knife ban zone.
Since the introduction of the no-knife zone in Stuttgart at the beginning of February, the police had recorded 71 offences by the end of October. The administration of the state capital recently reported 48 reports of violations of the weapons ban in the city center. In 31 cases, there were also violations of the Weapons Act. Fines were issued in 34 cases.
