Grünheide with highest increase in commuters

The municipality of Grünheide - home to the Tesla car plant - attracted more than twice as many commuters in 2022 than a year earlier. The town recorded the largest increase in commuters among Brandenburg's municipalities, i.e. people who do not live in Grünheide but travel there to work. This was announced by the Berlin-Brandenburg Statistical Office in Potsdam on Wednesday.

As of June 30 last year, a total of 9225 people were counted in Grünheide, which represents an increase of 111 percent. The Tesla plant opened in March 2022. In Großbeeren - a location for logistics centers - the increase was also four-digit at 1055 people (+10 percent).

There are always major differences between Berlin and Brandenburg: in 2022, only 13% of Berliners left the city for work. At 87%, the German capital also has the highest proportion of people who work in their own municipality of all German cities. In contrast, 65 percent of Brandenburg residents commuted to work beyond their municipal boundaries.

Most commuters who come to Berlin for work come from Potsdam - namely 23,455. Many also live in Falkensee, Schönefeld and other regions in Berlin's commuter belt.

Looking at Berlin and Brandenburg as a whole, the statisticians reported that one in three people in the region will not be working where they live in 2022. Around 1.1 million people in the two states commuted to work in another municipality. Compared to the previous year, this figure has increased by 2.4 percent.

  1. Due to the opening of the Tesla car plant, traffic in Grünheide has significantly increased, making the commute to work a challenging experience for many non-residents.
  2. Living in Grünheide might seem attractive due to the job opportunities at the Tesla plant, but the increased work-related commuting could negatively impact the overall quality of living in the town.
