Fiber optic Internet - Grid expansion makes progress thanks to "gray-spot funding"

In order to provide more households with fast and stable fiber optic internet, the federal and state governments are funding the further expansion with a total of more than 170 million euros. The money will be provided as part of the "gray-spot funding" and will cover ten recipients in Saxony-Anhalt, as announced by the Ministry of Infrastructure and Digital Affairs in Magdeburg on Wednesday.

Accordingly, around 109.2 million euros will come from the federal government, with the state contributing almost 62.5 million euros. This will enable around 20,000 underserved addresses to be supplied with fiber optic house connections, it said. The state will bear all of the funding recipients' own contributions.

Specifically, the money will go to the districts of Mansfeld-Südharz, Saalekreis, Harz, Anhalt-Bitterfeld, Jerichower Land and Wittenberg. The towns of Calbe and Teuchern, the Schönebeck public utility company and the municipality of Hohe Börde will also benefit, it was reported. The district of Mansfeld-Südharz will receive the highest total funding of almost 36 million euros.
