Soccer - Greuther Fürth come back twice: 2:2 at Schalke 04
SpVgg Greuther Fürth showed comeback qualities and maintained their strong unbeaten streak at FC Schalke 04 at the end of the soccer year. The club from Franconia twice came back from a goal down to earn a 2:2 (0:1) draw at relegated FC Schalke 04 on Friday evening in the 2nd Bundesliga.
In front of 60,166 spectators in the Veltins Arena, 19-year-old Keke Topp (30th minute) and Kenan Karaman (73rd minute) both gave Royal Blue the lead. Thanks to equalizers from captain Branimir Hrgota (50') and Simon Asta (77'), the visitors continued their recent run of seven games without defeat. They climbed to third place in the table, at least for one day. After Derry Murkin was shown a yellow card (80'), Schalke had to finish the game short-handed.
In the first clash between the two former first division teams in eleven years, Schalke got off to the better start. That paid off in the 30th minute. After a remarkable pass from Blendi Idrizi, young professional Topp was on hand to finish off the attack with a powerful shot from 14 meters. However, further chances to increase the lead at half-time went unused. That was punished shortly after the restart. Although Hrgota initially failed to beat Schalke keeper Ralf Fährmann with a lob, he pushed the rebound over the line.
Schalke's second goal through Karaman was even shorter-lived. Just four minutes later, Asta fired the ball into the net with a well-placed shot. Despite being outnumbered in the closing stages after Murkin was sent off, Fürth were unable to strike decisively.
