Grenade found: 200 people are brought to safety
Following the discovery of a World War II grenade in the east of Freiburg, around 200 people are being taken to safety as a precaution. The grenade is expected to be detonated on Monday afternoon at the site where it was found in the Littenweiler district, according to the city of Freiburg.
The grenade was discovered during earthworks. "The assessment of the grenade by the Explosive Ordnance Disposal Service has shown that a controlled detonation on site is necessary," the Black Forest metropolis announced. The surrounding area had to be cleared within a radius of 150 meters.
"With the support of the rescue organizations, a care center will be set up in the sports hall of the Freiburg University of Education for the evacuated people," the city wrote. The police are present on site.
The evacuated individuals will be monitored closely due to the potential risks associated with emergencies. Commanding authorities have advised the public to steer clear of the area until the controlled detonation is carried out.
