Greens demand clarification from Scholz on planned US-raket stationing

The lacking clarity "can even intensify fears and leave room for disinformation and provocation," criticized Nanni. "The Chancellor should clarify this quickly." Scholz has so far only scarcely addressed the actual threat situation of NATO.

Financial consequences also needed to be addressed, said the Green politician, looking at the coalition leaders' budget negotiations, where the size of the defense budget fell significantly short of expectations. About Germany's stationing agreement with the USA, she said: "This far-reaching decision is in contrast to the current budget negotiations and to the relatively cautious communication about the seriousness of the situation by Olaf Scholz himself."

On the sidelines of the summit, the USA announced that starting in 2026, they would again station missiles in Germany - initially "temporarily," later "permanently." Among them should be Tomahawk missiles and newly developed hypersonic weapons. Where exactly the weapons would be stationed remained open for the time being.

With this announcement, the USA want to make clear, according to reports, their commitment to NATO and deterrence in Europe. The United States had last stationed such long-range weapons in Germany in the 90s.

The Left warned against the planned stationing of US long-range weapons in Germany of a new arms race. The defense policy spokesperson of the Left in the Bundestag, Dietmar Bartsch, told the "Rheinische Post": "I find this decision highly problematic because the arms race under the label of deterrence is being cranked up further."

Similarly, BSW Chair Sahra Wagenknecht expressed herself. "The stationing of additional attack weapons on German soil does not improve our security, but rather increases the risk that Germany itself becomes a battlefield, with devastating consequences for all living here," she told "Spiegel." "This madness must finally be stopped."

  1. Sara Nanni, a Green politician, urged Chancellor Olaf Scholz to provide a requirement for clarification on NATO's actual threat situation, as lack of clarity could escalate fears and allow for disinformation.
  2. Financial implications associated with defense budget negotiations were also a concern for Nanni, as the expected budget for defense fell significantly short.
  3. In response to the United States of America's announcement of stationing missiles in Germany, starting in 2026, both temporarily and permanently, Nanni criticized Germany's stationing agreement as contradictory to the current budget negotiations and Scholz's cautious communication.
  4. Alliance 90/The Greens and the Left expressed concerns over the potential new arms race due to the planned stationing of US long-range weapons in Germany, including Tomahawk missiles and hypersonic weapons.
  5. The plans for US-Rocket Stationing in Germany, as reported by the Rheinish Post, were met with skepticism by Dietmar Bartsch, the Left's defense policy spokesperson, who cited these weapons as a cranking up of the arms race under the label of deterrence.
  6. BSW Chair Sahra Wagenknecht echoed these concerns, stating that the stationing of additional attack weapons on German soil would increase the risk of Germany becoming a battlefield, with devastating impacts on its residents.
  7. The Green politician called on Scholz to address the requirement for clarification on NATO's threat situation promptly and to reconsider the potential consequences of the announced US-Rocket Stationing in Germany.
