Political gatherings or events - Green state leaders express doubts about Boris Palmer's return.
The representatives of the Baden-Württemberg Greens have expressed doubt about the prospect of Tübingen Mayor Boris Palmer (independent) rejoining the party. Palmer has demolished any bridges that were attempted to be erected, according to Lena Schwelling and Pascal Haggenmüller on Monday. "Creating new, sturdy bridges appears to be an overwhelming task to us, considering the deep rifts, which would necessitate a lot from both sides and is not possible overnight," they added. This is particularly relevant as Palmer has opted to run for a position on the Tübingen district council for the Free Voters Association (FV) in the Tübingen constituency.
Previously, there were indications of a possible reconciliation between the Tübingen mayor and his previous party. Speaking at a Zeit publishing house event in Hamburg, Federal Agriculture Minister Cem Özdemir expressed his desire for a return. "People should never dismiss each other," stated the Green party member.
Palmer is also open to the idea of returning to the Greens. "A development that would culminate in my being a respected member of the Greens once more would be advantageous for both parties," said the independent politician to the German Press Agency when asked on Sunday. "I hold Cem Özdemir in high regard and am delighted about his conciliatory statements."
Mayor of Tübingen since 2007, Palmer has frequently disagreed with political remarks. In May of last year, Palmer exited the Greens due to a scandal surrounding the use of the N-word at a migration conference in Frankfurt. His party membership had already been in question due to other contentious statements. Following a hiatus, he modified the comment rules on his Facebook profile.
