SPD and the Greens are pushing for an expansion of tobacco-free zones in Lower Saxony, extending it to electronic cigarettes and cannabis use. The proposal, presented by the governing party faction in the state parliament today, aims to incorporate this change.

At present, smoking prohibitions in restaurants, educational institutions, medical facilities, and elderly care homes are strictly enforced against smoking cigarettes and joints, including cannabis. In the near future, indulging in tobacco and cannabis through electronic cigarettes and vaporizers will be prohibited as well.

The SPD and Greens defend this move by arguing that vapor is potentially harmful, particularly for children, pregnant women, the elderly, and chronically ill individuals. The growing popularity of e-cigarettes and vapes in non-smoking areas might challenge the "shift towards smoke-free environments."

The new system under consideration by SPD and Greens includes expanding tobacco-free zones, which currently prohibit smoking in restaurants, schools, hospitals, and elderly homes, to include tobacco-free zones for electronic cigarettes and cannabis use. In adherence to this proposed expansion, smoking electronic cigarettes and vaporizers will become prohibited in these designated areas.
